Global Case Management System (GCMS) notes and related government records may help a person understand information recorded on an immigration file, including application history, officer notes, assessments and reasons that may have contributed to a decision.

The appropriate access-to-information or privacy process depends on the requester, location, institution, whose information is involved and whether valid consent is required.

BIC Canada can assist with requesting GCMS/ATIP records for immigration and visa applications and reviewing the records once received. These records can be particularly useful when an application has been refused, delayed or requires clarification, as they may provide additional information about how the application was assessed.

A records request does not change or reconsider an immigration decision. Information released may also contain redactions, exemptions or internal terminology that requires proper context. GCMS notes provide a record of information available on the file at a particular time and should not be considered a complete or guaranteed explanation of every delay, concern or future decision.
